My Final Piece is a tribute to my grandad, Brendan Rafferty. Watching his battle with dementia, we saw a strong boisterous man become weak and fragile. The lost look in the eyes of someone you love and look up to, is enough to shatter your heart. My concept for this piece was to channel all of these surrounding emotions and provide a link between the “loss” of memory and current political events. Taking influence from my studies of Robert Rauschenberg, Mandy El-sayegh and James Rosenquist, I assembled this abstract expressionist collage of powerful imagery applied with different printing techniques. The political statements in this piece are to be interpreted differently amongst viewers and cause a controversy in discussion.
